Google Plus: Its Bigger, Its Better and Its a BUILDER!

Original post from MG Siegler from Techcrunch.com

Last night, you may have heard talk of a mysterious black bar appearing on the top of Google.com. Or you may have even seen it yourself. No, you weren't hallucinating. It was a sign of something about to show itself. Something big. Google+.
What is Google+? It's the super top-secret social project that Google has been working on for the past year. You know, the one being led by General Patton (Vic Gundotra) and General MacArthur (Bradley Horowitz). Yes, the one Google has tried to downplay as much as humanly possible — even as we got leak after leak after leak of what they were working on. Yes, the one they weren't going to make a big deal about with pomp and circumstance. It's real. And it's here.
Sort of.
You see, the truth is that Google really is trying not to make a huge deal out of Google+. That's not because they don't have high hopes for it. Or because they don't think it's any good. Instead, it's because what they're comfortable showing off right now is just step one of a much bigger picture. When I sat down with Gundotra and Horowitz last week, they made this point very clear. In their minds, Google+ is more than a social product, or even a social strategy, it's an extension of Google itself. Hence, Google+,..

Optimized Google Sites for Mobile

Original post by Luciano Cheng, Software Engineer (from enterprise blog)

As the dramatic growth of the mobile web changes the way people consume content, it's becoming increasingly important for publishers to provide a good mobile experience. With this in mind, we just added automatic mobile rendering in Google Sites for iOS 3.0+ and Android 2.2+ devices, and a mobile version of the Google Sites lists.

By going to General settings under More actions > Manage site and clicking on Automatically adjust site for mobile phones, your Google site will be automatically adjusted whenever it's viewed from an iOS or Android 2.2+ device:

BeforeAfter

The most noticeable automatic adjustments include:
  • Aligning the header layout and top bar
  • Fitting the width of the site to match the device's width
  • Smart handling of sidebars, horizontal navigation, and dropdown links
After you've enabled this feature, you can preview the page from your computer as a mobile viewer using More actions > Preview as viewer (Mobile).

You can also choose to hide some of the links in your site's footer to save vertical space.

It's also important for you to be able to access and search your own sites on the go, which is why we've also added mobile versions of the site list, sites search, and browse sites categories.

Just navigate to http://sites.google.com from any iOS 3.0+ or Android 2.2+ device for quick access to your sites.

As more people unplug from their desks and interact with content on the go, new doors are opening for everyone. We hope these tools will empower you to meet the challenges of publishing in a mobile world using Google Sites.

You may missed some interesting gadgets in Gmail

Original post by Martin Gruau, Consumer Operations (from official gmail blog)

To install any of these gadgets, follow those steps:

1) From your Gmail account, go to the Labs tab of Gmail Settings
2) Look for the Lab "Add any gadget by URL." Enable it, then click "Save changes."
3) Go to the new "Gadgets" tab under "Settings" and add the relevant .xml address.

Here's a list of a ten I've found worth trying out:

Introducing Non-Admin Chrome Frame

Original post by Robert Shield, Software Engineer (from chromium blog)

We released Google Chrome Frame in September 2009 to expand the reach of modern web technologies and help developers take advantage of HTML5's capabilities. Since then, we've seen great adoption of the plug-in by end users and developers. Even more exciting, we've heard from developers that Google Chrome Frame is enabling them to create legacy-free apps that are easier to build, maintain, and optimize.

However, there was one remaining obstacle to making Chrome Frame accessible to users of older browsers - users needed to have administrative privileges on their machines to install Chrome Frame. At this year's Google I/O we announced this obstacle has finally been removed.

Non-Admin Chrome Frame runs a helper process at startup to assist with loading the Chrome Frame plug-in into Internet Explorer. The helper process is designed to consume almost no system resources while running. Once installed, non-admin users will have the same no-friction experience that admin users of Chrome Frame have today.

You can try it yourself by installing the new non-admin version of Chrome Frame here. This is now available in our developer channel and is coming to stable channel very soon.

For more technical details, please see the Chrome Frame FAQ. Please share your feedback in ourdiscussion group and if you encounter any bugs while using Chrome Frame, please file them on Chromium's issue tracker. We'll be working hard to bring Non-Admin Chrome Frame up to the beta and stable channels over the coming weeks. You can help us move this up to stable as quickly as possible by trying out the current release and sending us your feedback!

Voice Search - Search by Voice on Google Chrome

Voice Search provides a method to search by speaking. For example, just click on the microphone and say "kittens" to search for kittens. If you specifically want pictures of kittens, say "google images kittens". Want to learn more about World War II? Say "wikipedia world war two".

Voice Search comes pre-loaded with the following default services: Google, Wikipedia, YouTube, Bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo and Wolfram|Alpha. You can also add your own user-defined search engines. It also integrates speech input buttons for text fields on all websites.

 Feature suggestions or bug reports

Go to http://purl.eligrey.com/github/voice-search/issues to file them. Please note that keyboard shortcut support or automatically capturing speech input as soon as the extension button is clicked are not possible at this time.

Google search page looks totally different now

More Layout Options for Custom Search

Original post by Ying Huang and Liang Ch'ng, Software Engineers (from google custom search blog)

Ever since the launch of Custom Search, users have asked us to provide more flexible options to integrate search into their websites. Today, we're launching a set of new layout options for your Custom Search experience. If you go to the Look and feel tab, you'll see a set of new layouts that you can choose from, as shown in the screenshot below.

The Two page and Results only layouts give you more flexibility than the Two column layout, which still requires the search box and results to reside on the same web page.

All of the above layouts are powered by the Custom Search Element. The new Google-hostedlayout also embeds the Element on a Google-hosted page. This is because the Element offers greater flexibility and interactivity, font control, better customization using themes and style sheets, out-of-box metadata support for thumbnails and actions, support for client-side control over results presentation, and a superior mobile experience for smart phones and tablets.

There are a couple of additional reasons why all the new layouts use the Element (and we'll continue to deliver new functionality this way too). We want all Custom Search users to be able to easily turn on upcoming new features on for their site visitors. Consolidating to the Element also allows us deliver features faster.

Along with these new layouts, we are also officially phasing out results presentation via the iframe. If you host results in an iframe today, you will see this option marked deprecated in the Look and Feel tab in the control panel. We encourage you to migrate as soon as possible to one of the Element-based layouts. We plan to replace iframe results soon to use embedded Elements. This will happen first with all existing Google-hosted results pages, which currently embed iframes.

So stay tuned -- there are exciting new features coming to Custom Search. And as always, we welcome your feedback.

Google - Faster than fast

Original post by Chris Bentzel, Software Engineer (from chrome blog)

What if a waiter handed you your meal, hot and fresh, the instant you ordered it? What if the elevator doors opened onto the eighth floor the instant you pressed the eighth floor button in the lobby? What if a web page appeared in your browser, loaded in its entirety, the instant you clicked on a search result?

Well, you might have to wait for Instant Restaurants and Instant Elevators, but Instant Pages is available today in the latest beta release of Chrome. Thanks to Chrome’s new prerenderingtechnology, some Google.com search results will appear to load almost instantly after you click on them. You can see this feature in action in the following video:

Although Google.com is the most high-profile site to use this new prerendering technology, it can be used by other sites since it’s been designed as a web standard. Web developers interested in learning more can see our post in the Chromium blog.

We’ve added a few more features in this release that users have been eagerly awaiting for some time. First, we’ve added some awesome to the omnibox by suggesting partial matches for URLs and page titles from your browsing history. For example, say you’ve listened to the song “Zorbing” by Stornoway a few times on YouTube, but you can’t remember the full song title or band name. Now, when you type just part of one of the words, like “orb,” you should get a suggestion due to the partial match: “YouTube.com - Stornoway - ‘Zorbing’ Official Video.”

Second, we’re happy to announce that issue number 173 in our public bug database, which has collected more than 900 “stars” from users around the world since it was filed in 2008, has been implemented on Windows and Linux (the Mac version is coming soon). That’s right--we’ve finally added Print Preview! Print Preview uses Chrome’s built-in PDF viewer to display the page you want to print, and it updates automatically as you adjust your print settings. You can also choose to save any web page as a PDF file, using the “Print to PDF” option that’s automatically included in the printer list. Thanks for being patient with us on this one!

Blog This - Chrome Extension

Original post by Bruce Polderman, Product Manager (from Blogger Buzz)

One of the things I often hear is how challenging it can be to generate ideas for topics to write about. This may be especially true for popular blogs when you feel as though your followers are eagerly awaiting your next post. Sitting down and staring at your computer with the hope of feeling inspired can result in disappointment.

On my blog for example, I have a mix of posts that were authored be me, and articles that I've discovered elsewhere that I think may be of interest to others. Like many of you, there are times when I have things that I'm eager to write about, and other times when I just want to share something.

If this sounds familiar, you may find the "Blog This!" Chrome Extension of interest. It enables you post to your blog from any web page with just one click. The Extension is available on the Chrome Web Store under the "Blogging" category.

When you install the extension, a button will appear on your browser toolbar. Simply click the button to open Blogger in a new application window.

The new post is pre-populated with a link to the web page you're on, as well as any text you've highlighted on that page. Edit the post to your liking and post it instantly to your blog.

Now you can "Search by Image" from Google

Now you can use an image instead of words to start your Google search

New Features for Mobile Search from Google

Oringal post by Scott Huffman, Director of Engineering (google mobile blog)
Our thirst for knowledge extends beyond the time we spend in front of our desktop computers. At Google, we are seeing mobile search grow at an exponential rate, increasing five-fold worldwide in just the past two years - a rate comparable to the early days of desktop Google Search. Today on mobile, we can get whatever information we’re looking for anytime, anywhere.

And I'm not just talking about looking up basic information like the weather or a stock quote, which is what people used to do in the early days of mobile search. As mobile devices have become more powerful and connected to faster networks, smartphone users are doing a surprisingly diverse set of search tasks -- from simple lookups, to tasks that involve multiple complex searches.

But it's not always easy to search from a mobile device, especially with the smaller screens and keyboards. We’ve worked relentlessly to make mobile search faster, easier, and more intuitive with features like autocompleteVoice SearchGoogle GogglesGoogle Instant andInstant Previews on mobile. Our work in mobile has now inspired desktop innovations likeVoice Search and Search by Image, two new ways to search from your desktop, announced today at our Inside Search media event. We’re also excited to introduce two new mobile features designed to make mobile search even better.

With more searches happening when people are on the go, we’ve noticed an increase in searches for nearby places. To make it easier for people to search for what’s around them, we’ve introduced new shortcuts to commonly searched local categories, like restaurants, coffee shops and bars, in the form of icons on the mobile google homepage (www.google.com):

Shortcut icons appear at the bottom of the mobile homepage. Tap “More”, to select from additional popular categories like shopping, ATMs, gas stations, etc., a new part of our simplified Places homepage (www.google.com/m/places).

On the results page, you'll see a map with markers for your current location and places around you. When you scroll through the results, the map remains at the top of the page and adjusts automatically to the listing you are looking at. That way, you can see the listing information while still getting location context from the map. Tapping on a result will quickly show you more about a place including reviews and other useful details. Discovering great places nearby has never been easier on your mobile phone.
Another mobile improvement we’ve introduced today is an easier way to build longer, more complicated searches. You can now add suggested phrases to the search box and “build” your search piece by piece. This feature is already available on the Google Search app for Android and iOS devices and we’re now making this available on www.google.com from your mobile browser. Watch the video below to see how you can search faster with less typing.

These new mobile features are now available on www.google.com on Android (version 2.2+) and iOS (version 4.0+) in 40 languages worldwide. If you would like to learn more about today’s announcements, visit the Inside Search website, our new one-stop shop for Google search tips, features and an under the hood look at our technology. Check the site later today and you’ll find a recording of the event, answers to common questions and links to other blogs posts today on the Official Google Blog, Inside Search blog and the Chrome blog.
We hope you enjoy these new search features and we look forward to bringing you further improvements by making mobile search even faster, easier, and more useful.
